A little background about the heart…

We commissioned an artist in Logan Square to sculpt the ceramic heart. It imitates a technique called Kintsugi, 金継ぎ, きんつぎ, “golden joinery” – The art of repairing pottery with gold, understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. When we look at David’s life, we see a man who was sinful, flawed, and broken, and yet he was a man after God’s heart.

In Psalm 51, David prays…

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.
